Bear Valley Music Festival goes pops twice

BEAR VALLEY — The Broadway Pops concert is traditionally a very popular Bear Valley Music Festival event and promises to be doubly exciting for Pops fans this season. Maestro Carter Nice has programmed two enticing Pops concerts for the enjoyment of Festival-goers and one with a unique twist.

A Tribute to the Music of Rodgers & Hammerstein and Andrew Lloyd Webber opens the Pops series on Wednesday, Aug. 3, and will feature three gifted vocalists from the San Francisco Bay Area performing with the Festival Orchestra.

Broadway veteran Clark Sterling and San Francisco Bay Area theater stars Danielle Kane and Robert Robinson will be the featured soloists.  The three vocalists will be performing legendary hits from Rodgers & Hammerstein in Act One, and show-stopping hits by Andrew Lloyd Webber in Act Two of the concert evening.

The second Pops concert titled, From Passion to Peril, will feature a combination of original compositions and popular love songs ranging from Carmen to Lady Gaga on Wednesday, Aug. 10.

Highlights for 2011 include orchestral favorites, chamber, music and lunch on the beach plus:

•July 29-31: Free Mamma Mia Movie in the tent and annual Star Party, followed by Adbcadabra- the Ultimate ABBA tribute, music and lunch on the mountaintop

•Aug. 4-5: Van Cliburn winner, Olga Kern’s triumphant return by popular demand and a special recital with her gifted son Vladislav.

•Aug. 6: Disney in Concert: Magical Music from the movies and a special kids day of music adventures and creativity.

•Aug. 12: A royal wedding reception theme with buffet dinner, free champagne, dancing, auctions, and music.

•Aug. 13: San Francisco’s famous Pocket Opera narrated in English by Donald Pippen and the annual Bear Valley Home Tour

•Aug. 14: Four of the best local bands rock the high country
