The Manteca Unified’s be.tech academies will be hosting an open house tonight from 6 to 7 p.m.
This is one of three open house events for this year, with the other two scheduled for this tuition-free, dependent charter school scheduled Feb. 20 and March 20.
The be.tech programs – included are be.cuisine, be.industrial, be.first – are located at the MUSD complex, 2271 W. Louise Ave., with be.next at Lathrop High.
Originally known as the Manteca Unified Vocational Academy, this part of the charter school program was the then-School of Culinary Art and Hospitality Services in 2012.
It eventually became be.cuisine a year later, providing students with the know-how in preparing entrees served at cafes and catered events. They also learned restaurant operations along the way.
A year later, be.industrial arrived on the scene, paving the way for those interested in a career in industrial technology and design. Students receive an education in design and fabrication skills in the areas of machining, welding and manufacturing while also utilizing plasma and laser technology to design and fabricate individual projects.
In 2014, be.first became part of be.tech. This was also the first responder academy where students had a chance to explore the world of public safety, security and emergency. All told, fire, law enforcement, military and medical response team were all part of be.first.
The be.next program joined be.tech in 2015. The STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) based courses consisted of game design, in particular, those interested in careers in video games or computer programming.
The vision for be.tech is for every student to graduate with high school diploma and be career-ready with the essential content knowledge and 21st Century skills.
In addition, a workshop for eighth-grade students is scheduled Saturday.
Included are the following:
uCulinary (8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.), where youngsters will not only explore the culinary field but spend time preparing recipes.
uFirst Responders (9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.). Eighth graders can receive basic training in Emergency Medical Services, police procedures and the firefighter career field.
uIndustrial (8 a.m. to 3 p.m.). Those attending will be able to explore computer aided design, 3D printing, laser cutting / engraving, CNC (computer numeric control) plasma cutting machines, welding, and cutting torch use.
For more information or to reserve a spot on the eight-grade student workshop, call the district office at 209.825.3200 or log on to www.mantecausd.net.
