Manteca is getting $1.5 million in federal stimulus funds to keep four officers in place.
U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer met with San Joaquin County law enforcement leaders Wednesday to tell them the money coming to Stockton, Lodi, Manteca, and the county will hopefully be just the start.
“I’m satisfied this isn’t enough – we have to do more,” Boxer told three area police chiefs and San Joaquin County Sheriff Steven Moore at a Wednesday afternoon press conference at the Sheriff’s headquarters in French Camp.
Boxer was referring to new funding in support of the officers on the beat in the Central Valley through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act geared to protect area communities.
Manteca Police Chief Dave Bricker was there along with the chiefs from Lodi and Stockton. Stockton alone is losing 80 officers from its police force and Manteca may lose as many as 15.
The Manteca City Council continued its discussion on police staffing and possible cuts until 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.
The San Joaquin County law enforcement agencies are receiving more than $16 million to hire 45 officers. Another $1.4 million went to Lodi to hire four officers and Manteca is receiving $1.5 million to also hire four officers.
The City of Stockton is getting $7.9 million to put 20 officers on their force and the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department’s grant is totaling $5.1 million for 17 deputies. In total the State of California police agencies are receiving more than $211 million to hire 649 officers.
