Jesus Ceja enjoyed a rather healthy lunch consisting of a peanut butter and jelly “Crustible” sandwich, a fresh fruit and milk.
“Everyone likes the ‘Crustible,’” said the Boys & Girls Club of Manteca / Lathrop member.
The free noontime meals are part of the Summer Food Service Program. The local club contracts Manteca Unified’s Nutrition Services, in turn, getting reimbursed from the state, according to Jon Cardoza, director of programs and operations.
“The food we serve is the food that kids like to eat,” he said. “MUSD has been flexible working with us, bringing extra food if needed.”
More meals were needed Wednesday as over 80 youngsters age 18 and under took advantage of the service.
“What’s more is that you don’t have to be a (Boys & Girls Club) member,” said youth coordinator Jonathan Reed. “Everyone gets fed.”
With school out, youngsters have been finding their way to the club. Cardoza noted serving 40 kids on Monday – the first day of the program – 66 on Tuesday, and 83 on the third day. He believes that the increased numbers thus far could be from the lack of a summer school program.
Of those numbers, Cardoza said that 15 percent are non-members.
Incidentally, the cost to join the club on year-round basis is $12. Included are a variety of services and activities for youngsters.
