Manteca kicked off the centennial year of the city’s incorporation with a breakfast Saturday morning at the Manteca Senior Center.
Former Mayor Willie Weatherford — Manteca’s longest serving mayor with 12 years under his belt when he stepped down in 2014 — quietly commanded a large round table of guests in the center of the room spending their time chatting about old times in the community. Mayor Steve DeBrum employed  his skills at running a live auction that raised hundreds of dollars to help support the year-long birthday celebration.
High school aged volunteers made sure guests were served with hot breakfasts and coffee at their tables
Retired Second Harvest Food Bank CEO Mike Maclory and his wife, retired City of Manteca Finance Director Suzanne Mallory had driven from their home in Lodi to attend, winning several raffle baskets during the morning event.
Police Chief Jody Estarziau was also present with her children for the breakfast as was Vice Mayor Rich Silverman and his family members along with Councilman Gary Singh and Fire Chief Kyle Shipherd all of whom were introduced.
There are a number of other events already scheduled in addition to others that are being finalized.
The dedication of the World War I mural along with the official city birthday party takes place Saturday, May 19.
The mural is the fifth and final in a series of five honoring those who served from the Manteca area in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and The Global War on Terror. The murals grace the eastern facing wall of the Manteca Bedquarters at Yosemite Avenue and Main Street.
It is believed to the largest concentration of murals in one location honor veterans in California.
Also planned are:
Movies in the Parks in the spring and summer.
A special extended aerial fireworks display on the Fourth of July.
An end of the year closing gala on Dec. 8.
A community mural project.
Planting of 100 trees throughout the city
East Union Cemetery events, tours, and scavenger hunt.
A sporting event to be determined.
The incorporation of centennial celebration components in the Crossroads Street Faire, Pumpkin Fair, and Independence Day parade.
