Burglar ends up being Toter ablaze from ashes

It was something of a miracle that a girl heard noise outside her bedroom at 4 a.m. Thursday and called her dad thinking someone was breaking into her home in the 800 block of Sweet Pea Lane.

Manteca Police were responding to a 911 call from the house as the dad checked outside the home to find a yard waste refuse Toter on fire where it had been left next to the side wall of the garage.  Ashes from the fireplace had been discarded in the Toter and had reignited.

Firemen said flames were going up the side of the house hot enough to break a window and do some structural damage.  Fire Captain Kyle Shipherd said that if the fire had gone unchecked for another 10 minutes he felt the fire would have taken hold of the structure.

Fire engines from Manteca and Lathrop-Manteca fire departments responded to the call along with several police patrol cars and a Manteca Ambulance unit.
