A Manteca Police canine sniffed out a carjacking suspect that led officers on a 30-minute foot chase Monday morning.

Jasiel Salmeron, 26, of Manteca, was taken into custody on a no-bail warrant police had first attempted to serve at his residence in the 1300 block of McNary Circle shortly before 10 a.m.  Salmeron responded by slamming the door on the officers, running out the back door and into surrounding homes.

Manteca officers gave chase on foot. Additional officers responded to the scene and set up a perimeter after the man allegedly kicked in the doors of occupied apartments on McNary Circle and East North Street, around the corner from his residence, startling the occupants. 

At the same time, Manteca’s canine officers were in training at the former Qualex (Kodak) building on Industrial Park Drive. Four responded with their dogs. 

Officer Jason Massey led his canine “Max” into the area of the apartment complex.  Max sniffed out the suspect who was taken into custody without resistance, police said. Residents in the neighborhood were told to stay inside their homes.
