LATHROP – Attention, would-be Iron Chefs. It’s time to get the cayenne out of the bag and see if your edible concoction can stand the heat in the race for the best chili in the 2010 chili cook-off.

This fun event, to take place Thursday, Sept. 23, is part of the week-long celebration of the annual Lathrop Days Celebration. This year’s event, though, will be a lot bigger than that of the previous years’ observances since it will also double as a belated birthday celebration for Lathrop as an incorporated city. San Joaquin County’s youngest city was incorporated on July 1, 1989.

Sign-ups are still accepted for the chili cook-off. Entry forms are available at the Lathrop Senior Center where the judging will take place starting at 6 p.m. Doors will be open at 6:30 p.m. for the public to come in and have a taste of the different chili dishes cooked up by the contestants. Donation for seven sample cups plus a 16-oz. bowl of house chili is $5 each. Cost for the house chili alone prepared by the Lathrop seniors is $3 for each 16-oz bowl.

There will be other food available as well for visitors. These include chili dog ($1.50 each), hot dog for a dollar, and 50 cents each for soda, bottle of water, and a bag of chips. There will be a drawing also for different prizes. Raffle tickets are a buck apiece, or six tickets for a donation of $5.

Entry fee for the cook-off is $10 per participant and must be paid by Friday, Sept. 17. Prizes are $100 for the winner, $75 for second place, and $25 for third place.

The annual Picnic in the Park Lathrop Birthday Celebration was scrapped this year because of lack of funds and not enough volunteer hands to make it happen, according to the report given by Diane Lazard to the council back in June. The decision was then made at the time by the Lathrop Birthday Committee to combine the belated birthday celebration to the Lathrop Days Celebration taking place September 20-25.

The Lathrop Senior Center is located at 15707 Fifth Street in Valverde Park. For more information about the cook-off, call the Lathrop Parks and Recreation Department at (209) 941-7380. You can also log on to the city web site at www.ci.lathrop.ca.us.
