The champagne toast to ring in the New Year is so five years ago.

If you’re in the mood for the festive scene that has quickly become one of Manteca’s busiest restaurants, then Tommy’s Beach Bar and Grill is likely your destination to welcome 2010 with a bang.

And while there will likely be champagne available, the house special is called a “Tommy Bomb” and plenty of those are expected to be flowing on Thursday night.

“It’s basically a mixture of Crown Royal and Peach Schnapps dropped into a glass of blueberry 180,” said staffer Jennifer Brown. “It’s quite good, and it’s one of our most popular drinks – we’re expecting to serve up quite a few of those that night.”

The restaurant will be open for normal business until 8 p.m., and then will close for an hour so that staff can decorate for the New Year’s celebration that will begin promptly at 9 p.m.

Owner Marcus Shahen is requesting that those wishing to attend the festivities contact the restaurant by Thursday at 3 p.m. to get their name on the guest list to prevent overcrowding. A dress code will be in effect at the discretion of the owner, and no hats or sports attire will be allowed inside.

Tommy’s bartender Jonathan Coenenberg will be keeping the dance floor hopping on the DJ tables. Both drink and appetizer specials will be available all night.

For Brown – who chooses to work on New Year’s Eve – the night is a chance to celebrate with the patrons that have become her family over the course of the year, and would most likely be the people she’d be out with even if she was off.

“There’s just such a festive atmosphere and it’s so much fun being a part of it,” Brown said. “For the most part it’s going to be all of the regulars and all of the people that I’d choose to spend my time with anyway, so it’s kind of a win-win.”

Last year, Brown said, the night ended with staffers dancing on the bar after everything wrapped up.

“It was a crazy time and everybody had fun,” she said. “We’re hoping to repeat that again this year. We’re all going to be watching the ball drop, so why not try a drop shot like the ‘Tommy Bomb’ at the same time?”
