Three different sizes of car seats were installed in parents’ vehicles throughout much of the day Saturday at a CHP inspection station that was set up in the Best Buy parking lot adjacent to the Highway 120 Bypass at The Promenade Shops at Orchard Valley.

David Halvorson, president of American Chevrolet in Modesto, was on hand to oversee the operation that gave out some 250 car seats funded by the Central Valley Chevy Dealers’ Association.  Halvorson said the effort by the car dealers was seen as a way they could give back to the community.

United Way was also a sponsor in the car seat check point and give away as was the Manteca Police Department and the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s STARS.

Manteca Explorers’ high school aged cadets were also on hand from start to finish Saturday helping guide parents through the program.  CHP officers from the division level also spent their day in Manteca to aid officers from the Stockton office.

There were as many as four lines of vehicles waiting to have their existing seats checked for safety.  Children were weighed on large scales and their height measured to determine the appropriate new seat that was needed to meet their needs.

Officers demonstrated their skill in installing the new safety seats with a well- planted knee placed next to the base of the car seat in the back seat cushion of the vehicle.  There was an obvious talent in knowing just how to secure and infant or a small child.

Seats were in three size and weight categories: infant to 20 pounds, children 20 to 40 founds and booster seats for those weighing 40 to 60 pounds.

CHP public affairs officer Angel Arceo credited the huge turnout of parents to the advertising that was done on radio, TV, and newspapers.  Two Hispanic radio stations set up their booths on site with the Explorers selling choice hot dogs, sodas and water.
