Chris Shaefer is ATF assistant deputy director

Christopher Shaefer has been recently promoted to the elite position of Deputy Assistant Director with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.  

Shaefer started his law enforcement career with Manteca Police in 1982 and served for 10 years before being hired by ATF. Shaefer’s brother Jon also worked for the Manteca Police for about 10 years. Jon Shaefer is currently a partner with In Shape Health Clubs.

The brothers are seventh generation Mantecans.

In 1992, Shaefer was hired by ATF as a Special Agent and was assigned to the Sacramento Field Office.  In April 2002, he was promoted to Supervisory Special Agent in the San Francisco Field Office.  In May 2004, Shaefer was assigned to the Office of Professional Responsibility and Security Operations Inspection Division at ATF Headquarters in Washington, DC.

In 2007, he was promoted to Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Los Angeles Field Division.  In 2013, he was promoted to Special Agent in Charge of the Atlanta Field Division for ATF. Then on May 2 of this year ATF Director B. Todd Jones announced his promotion to the Deputy Assistant Director of the Office of Public and Governmental Affairs at ATF headquarters in Washington, DC.  Shaefer started his new job on Monday, Aug. 4.

He is one of only eight Deputy Assistant Directors that are under the Deputy Director and then the actual Director.

Shaefer is married to his Janice “Martin” Shaefer. They have three adult sons, Christopher, Jeffrey and Michael.
