A hit and run motorist fled the scene of a rear end crash shortly before 11 a.m. Thursday on the Highway 120 Bypass and was chased down and detained by an off-duty correctional officer after jumping the freeway fence near Costco.

CHP Sgt. David Wharry said the suspect was eventually arrested for driving under the influence after colliding with a white Dodge pickup that was pulled onto the shoulder of the roadway to correct a shifting load.   The collision reportedly blocked the number one lane.   The CHP officer said the DUI suspect had been driving a Ford Explorer westbound on the freeway.

Manteca officers also responded to the scene to assist in the incident where traffic was backed up for miles to the east as fire units responded to the crash.
