A Manteca tradition won’t become a victim of the budget crisis.
The Manteca City Council last week nixed plans to recover costs incurred for the use of Library Park for the summer farmers market. That effectively saves the Manteca Convention & Visitors Bureau about $1,000 on the popular activity that they barely break even on each year.
Had the council not waived the fees, the CVB was prepared to move the farmers market elsewhere on private property outside of downtown.
The CVB stages the weekly downtown certified farmers market to showcase not just local growers and their products but also downtown.
The first market is Tuesday, June 2. They run on Tuesdays from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. through the end of August. A coupon will appear in next weekend’s Manteca Bulletin that will be good for one free pound of yellow peaches from DePalma Farms for the first 100 people presenting the coupon.
Some of the farmers participating are DePalma Farms that sells peaches, nectarines, nuts, olives, plums, corn and more; Mehl Berry Farms that sells strawberries; Fisher Farms that sells apricots, pluots, plums, apples, pears, grapes, peaches, tomatoes; M & L Campuzano Farms that sells tomatoes, beans, squash, chilies, melons, onions and more.; Four K Farms that sells natural and flavored almonds and walnuts, fruit spreads, fruit butters and almond butter, almond flour, dried fruit, English cucumbers, tomatoes; Chinchiolo Farms that sells apples, cherries, pluots, peaches, nectarines; and M & L Campuzano Farms that sells fresh herbs and more.
You can also taste fresh food being cooked each Tuesday night from Andersons209 BMX that is selling hot dogs, chips and ice cream as well as Mac Doogles selling kettlekorn.
The first week’s entertainment will be provided by the Group “W” band.
Market themes this year are:
•July 14: Kids Day featuring youth club organizations with the new park water feature fun.
•July 28: Shred-It day, bring your papers and e-waste for a free day of cleaning.
•Aug. 11: American Graffiti Night – Car Show, 50’s Music.
There are many other vendors at the market that just may have something that may interest you like hats, clothing, jewelry, dried fruits, fresh bakery foods, sports memorabilia, real estate, financial services, beauty tips and supplies, animal shelter, police department Megan’s Law, newspapers, automobile accessories, animal supplies and treats, toys, scrapbooking, photography, kids fun and games, and much more.
