An 18-year-old former Manteca resident suspected in a knife attack on a JC Penney loss prevention agent during a shoplifting incident Wednesday was arrested before being able to flee San Joaquin County on a Greyhound bus.
Manteca Police responded Wednesday to the JC Penny’s store located at 1060 Perimeter Drive regarding a man who used a knife while a loss prevention agent tried to detain him.
Timothy Early Shaw allegedly had gone into the store and stolen some shoes. The suspect was followed out of the store by the agent. The police said the suspect turned around with a knife in hand and then wounded the agent and ran to a waiting car.
The store agent was treated and released at the scene with a knife wound to his hand.
Police were unable to locate the suspect or vehicle that evening. They used the store’s state –of-the-art video surveillance equipment a video tape of the suspect was produced showing him entering the store. Area law enforcement officers were shown the video in hopes to identify the suspect.
Within hours the suspect was identified as Shaw.
On Friday at 12:18 p.m. members of the Street Crimes Units and Gang Unit using intelligence information learned that Shaw had plans on leaving San Joaquin County via Greyhound bus from Stockton. Surveillance teams were set up at the bus station and at a residence located on Washington Street in Stockton in hopes of locating Shaw before he got onto the bus. Detectives Zack Fay, Marnix Lub and Paul Carmona watched Shaw leave a residence in the 4700 block of E. Washington St. in Stockton. When they went to contact him he ran from them back into the residence. Detectives chased him into the residence where he was taken into custody upstairs without incident.
Shaw was returned to Manteca were Detective Bryan Holland took over the investigation and eventually charged Shaw with robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, and burglary.
He was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail. Bail was set at $125,000.
Detectives are continuing the investigation in hopes of identifying the driver of the suspect car described as a 1998 to 2000 purple Camaro or Trans Am. Crime Stoppers (823-4636) is offering up to $1,000 cash reward leading to the identity of the driver of the vehicle.
