Copper thieves struck at the Brown Sand, Inc. operation near Mossdale sometime over the weekend causing in excess of $10,000 in damage, according to San Joaquin County sheriff’s deputies.

Brown Sand is located on the south side of West Mossdale Road in Lathrop – a large operation that cleans sand for the purpose of making plastic sand and pool sand.

The theft occurred at the southwest corner of the property where industrial level machinery draws sand out of a lake area with a sand hopper and a conveyor belt that stretches approximately one-quarter mile to a separation and cleaning site.

Thieves hit electrical boxes at that point and some 25 yards away as well another electrical box that houses circuit breakers and starters.  Some 1100 feet to the west is another electrical service box that also houses starters and circuit breakers.  Three electrical wires run through conduit between the boxes and had connected to the power source.

At both electrical boxes, the wires were cut and one wire approximately one-quarter inch in diameter was pulled from the conduit and taken.  The loss of that one wire in the combination of three required all three wires to be installed in a new conduit before operations could be resumed, deputies said.
