Felonies still going down in Manteca

Felony crimes continue to drop in Manteca.

Major felonies are off 20.57 percent during the first three months of this year compared to the same period in 2013. That comes on the heels of a 5.36 percent drop in felonies in 2013 based on Manteca Police Department crime statistics. Manteca had two back-to-back years of felonies ticking upwards in 2011 and 2012 after dropping in 2010.

Eleven major felonies felony categories are tracked by the FBI to determine a community’s relative safety. Despite adding nearly 3,600 more residents in the past four years. Manteca’s overall felonies tallied 2,134 in 2013, some 32 less than the total in 2009.

Misdemeanors are also down in Manteca from January to March with 883 reported compared to 919 during the first three months of 2013.

Miscellaneous offenses are up 10.34 percent during the first three months of 2014 driven primarily by a 102.56 percent jump in fraud and forgery with 158 cases this year compared to 78 last year. Among miscellaneous offenses, those involving narcotics have dropped 8.4 percent and those with alcohol have fallen 30.77 percent.

Traffic accidents are up 29.38 percent going from 160 to 207 while the number of injury accidents increased 18.92 percent from 37 to 44. Tickets for moving violations are down 49.09 percent going from 438 to 223.

Of the 11 felony categories seven have dropped and four have increased.

Dropping from January-March 2013 to January-March 2014 were:

• Residential burglaries 54.74 percent going from 95 to 43.

• Other burglaries 20 percent going from 13 to 7.

• Auto burglaries 25.35 percent going from 142 to 106.

• Grand theft 20.41 percent going from 49 to 39.

• Vehicle theft 15.46 percent going from 97 to 82.

• Arson 71.43 percent going from 14 to 4.

• Rape 25 percent going from 4 to 3.

• All other felonies 11.57 percent going from 121 to 107.

Increasing from January-March 2013 to January-March 2014 were:

• Homicide going from 0 to 2.

• Robbery 75 percent going from 16 to28.

• Aggravated assault 11.11 percent going from 18 to 20.

• Commercial burglary 25 percent going from 24 to 30.
