Idling car stolen, police make arrests minutes later

Warming up a car for the drive to work once again attracted car thieves — this time in the 300 block of South Union Road.

But it all turned out well with Manteca Police patrolman Ken Wells arresting two men for auto theft minutes later.  He had no way of knowing the car was stolen just a short time before at 7 a.m.

Wells made a traffic stop on the vehicle to soon hear on his radio that the car had just been taken while its owner was back inside his residence.  The two men in the vehicle were recognized as having a history of auto theft in the community.

Daniel Furtado, 29, and Christopher Mahoney, 20, are both of Manteca .  Furtado was charged with auto theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, and  possession of burglary tools.

Mahoney was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and auto theft as well.
