Manteca Police patrolman John Moody has a knack for finding stolen cars in and around Manteca.
Moody remembers license numbers and vehicle descriptions that he pulls from the depths of his mind when he sees a suspicious car.
That was the case Tuesday morning about 10:30 a.m. when he dropped in behind a white, 1992 Honda Accord. As he called for backup the vehicle pulled into the Quick Stop gas pumps at 505 North Main Street at the intersection with Alameda Street.
Other officers quickly responded and surrounded the vehicle with tinted windows that kept officers from seeing inside the vehicle and more importantly seeing what the occupants were doing with their hands.
The driver Brandi Boutte, 28, of Manteca, exited the vehicle on command. Officers said two men resisted to step out of the car as officers addressed the vehicle at gunpoint. Canine officer Grant Flory and his dog “Spike” were there as a way to remove the men.
Officers shouted that if the two did not come out of the vehicle on their own they would send the dog in to bring them out – they backed out with their hands held over their heads.
Boutte was charged with auto theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, and possession of shaved keys – one of which was in the ignition. She was booked into San Joaquin County Jail in lieu of $34,000 bail.
Passenger Kenneth Casey Jones, 18, a Manteca transient, was charged with possession of stolen property and was jailed in lieu of $20,000 bail. Ruben Edward Alvarez, 20, also of Manteca, was charged with possession of stolen property also with $20,000 bail.
