A 19-year-old driver was shot while driving south on the East Highway 99 Frontage Road early Saturday morning north of Lathrop Road.

The victim said a newer Chevrolet pickup truck pulled up next to him and shot at his vehicle.

The driver told San Joaquin County Sheriff’s deputies he heard a loud pop but didn’t initially realize he had been shot. He did not get a look at the suspects.

When he realized he had been shot, he called a friend who responded immediately and then drove him to the emergency room at Doctors Hospital of Manteca.

The emergency room staff stabilized the victim. He was then transported to the University of California Medical Center in Sacramento for further treatment.

The incident occurred at 1:45 a.m.

The investigation in the shooting is ongoing.
