Phone caller asks for bank routing info

A caller described as being aggressive by a 69-year-old senior citizen demanded the man’s bank routing number or he might not receive his Social Security check this month.

The Manteca man called police and then the Manteca Bulletin and reported the call from an unknown woman who asked to put him on hold for a minute.  Moments later a male voice came on the line, he said, and asked for the routing number to his checking account.

The man said he repeatedly refused to divulge his account number to the caller who finally hung up.  He added that he called the callback number he was given and reached someone in Stockton who claimed they knew nothing of the phone call.

Had he revealed the routing number, anyone could have had access to his bank account online.
