A car crash morphed into a reported carjacking Tuesday but ended up being a case of domestic violence.
Manteca Police were dispatched at 11 p.m. Tuesday to assist the California Highway Patrol with a traffic collision at South Airport Way and the Highway 120 Bypass.
The call came in as a vehicle crash but a second call was received from an individual saying he was the victim of a carjacking involving one of the two vehicles.
The caller said the carjacking took place in Tracy. The vehicle suspected of causing the crash in Manteca was his car that he claimed was stolen. The caller said he would be going to Tracy police to make a report.
The crash involved two vehicles both of which rolled on opposite sides of the on ramp to the Highway 120 Bypass. Officer Shupperd started to investigate the incident along with the highway patrol when they determined that the caller was really a suspect in a domestic violence incident.
Mario Gonzalez, 27, of Manteca had been released from the county jail earlier in the day. He was hiding near the Costco in Manteca where his girlfriend was employed.
Gonzalez had been in custody for domestic violence and had a restraining order not to approach his 29-year-old girlfriend. The unidentified girlfriend saw Gonzalez in the parking lot and left in a friend’s car to avoid contact. Gonzalez in an attempt to contact the girlfriend against the orders of the court decided to chase them in his car. Police said Gonzalez caused the collision at Airport Way and the Highway 120 Bypass and then fled the scene with other friends in a separate car. No one was injured in the crash.
Gonzalez was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon plus violation of a domestic violence order. He was taken to the San Joaquin County Jail.
