Mutual aid from a Sheriff’s canine officer and his dog brought an end to what started as a domestic violence dispute in the 500 block of Michigan Avenue Thursday morning with a parolee-at-large attempting to hide under the house.

When officers first arrived on the scene some 10 days ago, the male subject retreated out the back door of the house and officers were unable to locate him who they identified as Steve Gier, 37, of Manteca.  It was discovered that he had a parole hold in the system.

Shortly after 9:30 Thursday morning officers were again called to the Michigan Avenue home in an attempt to contact Gier.  A perimeter was established around the residence and officer spotted the suspect in the garage as he started to run out into the back yard but instead stepped into the residence.

Believing the parolee was possibly barricading himself in his home, Manteca officers requested K-9 support from the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department.  While officers were checking the residence, a crawl space was reportedly located in a rear bedroom leading under the home.

The sheriff’s deputy called out several times that he was sending his K-9 “Blitz” under the house unless someone identified themselves.  “Blitz” went through the bedroom and under the residence and apprehended the suspect with a bite to his left leg.  Officers said Gier was taken into custody without further incident.

The suspect was checked by Manteca Ambulance medics on the scene, but he refused treatment.  Once it was determined that no immediate medical attention was required, he was transported to the Manteca Police Department for treatment.  He was later cleared by San Joaquin County Hospital to be booked into county jail.

Fresh charges included assault with a deadly weapon, obstructing a police officer and for felony parole violation.  He is scheduled to appear in the Manteca Branch of the San Joaquin County Superior Court Monday, May 7, at 1:30 p.m.
