Cody Guy Starkey, 19, of Manteca was charged with attempted murder Sunday night some 11 hours after a shotgun assault in the garage of a triplex in the 700 block of South Union Road.

The victim of the close-range shooting, Dwayne Harris, 29, was listed in critical condition Monday morning following surgery at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. He was rushed to the Modesto trauma center with what witnesses described as arterial bleeding from his leg wound.

Manteca Police detectives located Starkey at the home of relatives in the 200 block of Hemlock Avenue and asked him to go with them to the police department to be interviewed. After talking with him he was arrested and charged in the case, police said.

Detective Sgt. Tony Sousa said the 20-gauge shotgun was found at the scene by patrolmen first investigating the case. Sousa lauded the quick reaction of the responding officers coupled with the follow-up police work by detectives in quickly solving the case.

“An excellent job,” Sousa said.

Officers said it did not appear that the shooting was gang-related. Starkey had been living at the Union Road address with his mother when the incident occurred.

The suspect is being held at the San Joaquin County Jail in French Camp with no bail allowed. His arraignment is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. today in the Manteca Branch of the San Joaquin County Superior Court.
