A high speed pursuit of two murder suspects that began 90 minutes earlier in San Mateo County ended shortly after 9 p.m. Wednesday when a spike strip was deployed on Interstate 5 near the San Joaquin River crossing.

One of the suspects was reported to be responsible for three homicides - two in East Palo Alto and one in Colorado.  The men were reported to be armed and dangerous.  CHP and news helicopters monitored the chase over the Altamont Pass.

Up to nearly 20 CHP patrol vehicles chased a silver Mercedes first on northbound I-880 near Newark and Hayward continuing into Oakland with the suspects turning onto the I-980 freeway.  It was shortly after 8 p.m. when the vehicle sped eastbound onto the 580 freeway.

The chase moved on through Livermore, reaching Tracy by 9 p.m.  The suspects led officers onto eastbound I-205 when the vehicle lost the air in its tires from the CHP spike strip when it reached I-5 near Mossdale Crossing in Lathrop.

Arrested on suspicion of murder charges were Jaime Cardenas, 19, and Fidel Silva, 24, both of East Palo Alto. A third suspect -Christian Fuentes, 20, was already in custody.

They were being sought in connection with the killings of 19-year-old Cate Fisher on July 13 and 26-year-old Hugo Chavez on July 19.
