LATHROP – A 19-year-old employee at Target store in Lathrop was arrested Wednesday and booked into San Joaquin County Jail on charges of grand theft and embezzlement.
Erica Deanda is accused of literally pocketing $1,700.13 from sales receipts while working in the Starbucks department of the Target store located at the 16800 block of Golden Valley Parkway in Lathrop just east of City Hall.
A video surveillance set up by the store’s loss-prevention manager after a report was made about a “suspicious trend” of cash shortage in the register where the suspect had been working showed Deanda removing cash from the cash register and then placing the money in her apron.
The store’s loss-prevention manager called law enforcement officers about the alleged theft, according to police reports.
The manager told police that after being alerted about money missing on several occasions at the Starbucks register where the suspect was assigned, an internal investigation was launched which revealed that Deanda’s register had “multiple suspicious transactions” totaling to the aforementioned amount.
The manager then set up a video surveillance and carefully watched Deanda. On four separate occasions, Deanda appeared to be placing money in her apron that she had taken from the cash register.
