An 18-year-old Manteca gang member has been arrested in the Friday afternoon shooting in the Martha and Sequoia avenues neighborhood that terrified neighbors who witnessed the scenario.
Rudy Valber and an unidentified minor had been detained by Manteca Police officers minutes after the incident several blocks away at Locust and El Dorado streets. Witnesses were driven by the pair in a roadside line up. They alleged Valber was the shooter who fired one round at a house in the 800 block of Sequoia Avenue.
Police charged the teen with three felonies: street terrorism, discharging a weapon at an occupied residence with gross negligence and being part of a street gang. Valber is being held in the San Joaquin County Jail in lieu of $825,000 bail.
His court appearance is set for April 28, in the Manteca Branch of the San Joaquin County Superior Court.
Some neighbors ran for cover at about 4:30 Friday afternoon when they heard the shot and saw three teens running by their homes – one holding a black, semi-automatic hand gun. Witnesses said the shooter appeared to be aiming at another teen standing outside a duplex just down the block.
They noted the other teen seemed to goat the shooter with an outreach of his arms, yelling “Come on!” One neighbor said the shooter hesitated as he neared the corner, turned around and looked like he was going to shoot again.
Officers located on spent casing from a .45 weapon in the middle of the street. Officers said they did not locate the weapon.
