RIPON — A Ripon Police foot pursuit Wednesday morning led officers from an area near the LaQuinta Inn at Highway 99 and Jack Tone Road to the traffic lanes of Highway 99.
Officer Scott Lindsay discovered a car parked near the motel with outdated license tags that he deemed suspicious. When he went to talk with the motorist the man bolted from his vehicle and ran toward the Highway 99 freeway.
He left a woman passenger and a 15-year-old boy in the car.
Josse Angel Dominguez, 19, of Manteca led officers on a foot pursuit toward the southbound lanes of Highway 99 where police said he ran into freeway traffic pleading motorists to stop and give him a ride.
The suspect’s actions stopped motorists and caused a non-injury traffic accident.
Police said Dominguez managed to stop much of the traffic flow and was seen banging on windows of vehicles wanting the motorists to let him in their cars after he had thrown some $4,000 in cash in the bushes along the freeway.
Officers said when Dominguez couldn’t get a ride with southbound motorists he jumped the center divider and stepped in front of oncoming traffic — giving them the choice to stop or to hit him.
Ripon officer Paul Staley caught up with the Manteca man about 20 yards south of the Jack Tone Road overpass.
Police requested a traffic break by the CHP in the southbound mid-day flow of vehicles. They had their suspect quickly arrested and called off the request.
Dominguez and his passenger Yvette Carino, 24, also of Manteca were charged with possession of marijuana for sale and conspiracy. Police said Carino had a history of theft and drug convictions.
Dominguez was also charged with obstruction of a police officer and the attempt to destroy the cash that he threw into the bushes — mostly $20 bills, police said. He was also charged with attempted carjacking for his efforts on the freeway.
Both Mantecans were booked into San Joaquin County Jail in French Camp. The 15-year-old was released to his parents, according to officers.
