A Manteca woman was near the Marketplace Cinema 10 when she was taken out into the country and sexually assaulted before being brought back into downtown Manteca and ordered to withdraw funds from her bank’s ATM.

Manteca Police Detective Sergeant Tony Souza said the woman was waiting near the theater shortly before Friday night for her teenagers whom she had dropped off at the movies when the carjacking took place.

The carjacker confronted her with a firearm and slid in behind the wheel, driving her to an area south of Manteca where the assault took place.  After he took money from her ATM she returned to the theater parking lot and told her children what had happened.  Police were called just before 2 a.m. Saturday.

Manteca detectives aided by Ceres police officers arrested John Anthony III, 36, of Manteca at a south Modesto home after they identified the suspect.

Detectives Tony Souza, Steve Beerman and Wayne Miller were all involved in the arrest.

Ceres Police officers apprehended the suspect after he reportedly fled out of a back window at the residence.  Detective Steve Beerman said the case – based on the crimes charged – has the potential of sending the suspect away for life in prison.

Anthony was charged with carjacking, kidnap with the purpose of sexual assault and robbery.  Having been in prison for similar convictions, he had been released just 95 days ago, according to Manteca Sergeant Ralph Colin.

Anthony was charged with five felonies and his parole was revoked creating a “no bail’ status at the San Joaquin County Jail.  He is set to appear in the Manteca Branch of the San Joaquin County Superior Court, Department 1, at 1:30 p.m. on July 16.
