Sheridan Holland celebrated his 83rd birthday Tuesday by completing 67,400 abdominal crunches.
“I would’ve had done 100,000 but I started getting nauseated,” he said.
Crunches are just part of his exercise routine. He runs, walks and logs in miles on a stationary bike. Over the years, he’s worn down exercise equipment such as the Nordic Track and Bullworker.
Holland and his wife, Shirley, have called Manteca home since 1986.
She’s an LVN while he is retired from the Navy and a deacon at Greater Faith Mission Baptist Church in Stockton under Pastor Rev. La Vell Jones.
He credits every single accomplishment to his faith.
Holland’s current exercise log dates back to Aug. 20, 2008. On that day, he did 300 pushups in under two minutes.
He used to run regularly, including early morning jogs from his home near Sunfish Drive and Wawona Street, up Union Road, and to the San Joaquin County refuse disposal site on Lovelace Road.
“I have a sore foot. But I’ll be running again in another month,” said Holland, who can remember running barefooted in Texas at age 6.
He grew up in Hayward and ran track in high school, kicking it up a few notches with his exercise routine while in the Navy during his 1969 tour of duty in Da Nang, Vietnam. Back then, he completed 1,500 sit-ups.
Over the years, Holland has managed to save all of his newspaper clippings, awards, medals, and event participant numbers.
Evident of that are the ones worn during his two half-marathons in the early 1980s.
In 1984, Holland stunned the 200-meters Masters field of the Northern California Senior Olympics, clocking 27.4. “I hadn’t run in 15 years,” he said.
Holland later improved on that time with a 20.90.
He’s competed in numerous runs in Tracy, Manteca and the Bay Area, including some of the Pumpkin Runs and the defunct Bulletin Run.
“I like to run,” Holland said. “I’ll go into my orbit – I just keep on pumping (my arms).”
He uses pennies to keep track of the number of crunches. In his office, Holland keeps several containers of coins nearby, with each penny representing 100 crunches.
“Each container has 100 pennies (to signify 10,000 crunches),” he added.
His wife, Shirley, is aware of his routine.
“He exercises early in the morning and then eats, showers and sleeps,” she said.
For Sheridan Holland, there are very few, if any, off days.
“You have exercise every day. But it takes discipline. And absolutely no drinking (alcohol) or smoking,” he said.
Holland gave up soft drinks, lives by the good book, and burns off what food he eats. He’s particularly proud of his rock-hard abs.
“That’s from doing a lot of crunches,” he added. “I’ll do 20,000 every other day.”
Holland has the pennies to prove it.
