Building on the success of last year’s event, The Commons at Union Ranch will again hold its “Dancing with the Manteca Stars” competition.  The free event, which celebrates the second anniversary of the assisted living community, takes place on Friday, June 25, from 4 to 6 p.m. and is open to the public.

“My dance partner and I have a dance routine that will have a twist so look for some surprises,” hinted Councilman Vince Hernandez.  “I’m also excited to be part of this event, especially since it will help raise funds for a great cause, which is the Alzheimer’s Association.”

Phil Waterford, president and owner of Manteca Ford-Mercury & Exotic High Line, will also be among the dancers competing for bragging rights.

“Dancing is not my forte.  However, I am very competitive and accept this challenge,” Waterford said.  “Most importantly I look forward to raising funds for and awareness of one of the most costly diseases to society. We’ve got to find a way to manage Alzheimer’s and ultimately find a way to prevent it. Support the Alzheimer’s Association!”

Among the celebrity dancers are Jeff Jones from the Manteca Ambulance, Jeff Shields who is the CEO of the San Joaquin Irrigation District, Debby Morehead from the Manteca Chamber, Mick Founts the Superintendent of San Joaquin Schools, Optometrist Fred Stellhorn, and Lou George, a resident of Del Webb who donated $20,000 to the American Cancer Society in funds from recycling cans.

Marketing Director Helen Lopez who is organizing the event is thrilled with how well the residents and the community have received the event.

“Last year’s event proved to be an instant hit,” she said.  “Local dignitaries trained for weeks and then danced for our residents, their families and the community. We were able to raise about $2,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association and hope to raise more this year with our silent auction.”

The celebration includes wine, appetizers and live music, and is from 4 to 6 p.m. with the dance competition at 5 p.m.
