Dozen charges fail to keep suspect in jail

Nearly a dozen charges against Edward Williams Adams, 18, last Sunday were not enough to keep the Manteca man behind bars.

Adams had allegedly stolen a clean 1997 Mustang from and older Manteca couple and later led officers on a high speed chase through downtown Manteca before he broadsided the vehicle into the dentist’s office near the southeast corner of Yosemite and Maple avenues.

Manteca Police Sgt. Jody Estarzeau said she noticed Adams driving the wanted Mustang southbound on Main Street Sunday morning shortly before 11 a.m. – right after the stolen report was aired – when he turned onto Sutter Street and then flipped a u-turn at Grant Avenue driving back to Main where he cut across traffic.

“I’m just grateful he didn’t kill a pedestrian as he was going 50 to 60 miles an hour on Main Street,” she said.
Estarzeau as she followed him down Main Street and then she turned west bound onto Yosemite Avenue seeing him broadside into the dentist’s office.  She said there was a short foot pursuit with Officer Richard Smigelski joining her in a chase into the Auto Zone parking lot at the end of Maple Avenue.

The crash sheared off a city tree at its base, police added.

Officers recovered what they believed to be stolen property from an auto burglary along with other items – purses and wallets – that matched the description of valuables taken from homes along Woodward Avenue.

Williams’ charges included felony evading of police officers, driving on the wrong side of the street, resisting arrest, auto theft, possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of other stolen property.  Moderate damage was sustained by the vehicle – mostly on the driver’s side, police said.
Bail had been set at $137,000.

Offenders are often released at the San Joaquin County Jail in French Camp because of the lack of space needed for those with more serious charges.
