A DUI checkpoint Friday night saw one motorist flee and head east from the 300 block of West Louise Avenue with two Manteca Police units in pursuit.
Officers said a male Hispanic motorist initially told police that he had left his license at home.  He was asked to drive forward into a holding area on the side of the road.  Instead he fled from the checkpoint at a high rate of speed.
The man with one male passenger drove southbound on North Main Street and attempted a left turn at North Street where he collided with a signal control box at the southwest corner, according to a witness.  He continued on eastbound on North Street where the units discontinued their pursuit due to public safety concerns.
The checkpoint had 675 vehicles pass through its cone lanes. Twenty-seven drivers were screened and 13 were given field sobriety tests behind the wheel, according to police.  Six vehicles were impounded and six other vehicles were cited for having no license.  There were no DUI arrests and no outstanding warrant arrests.
