East Union High senior Aaron William Dyke was recently accepted to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.
He received a U.S. Service Academy Congressional Nomination from Congressman Jerry McNerney, and is scheduled to be a member of the Class of 2013.
Dyke said the Air Force Academy is “my dream school – My No. 1 choice.”
He plans to major in Political Science and Military Strategic Studies, with a goal of going to pilot school and becoming an Air Force fighter pilot
Dyke is also looking forward to a long military career
Each year, some 10,000 may qualify and are deemed competitive enough to apply and fully complete the long application process. But only 1,200 on average are accepted.
“It’s very competitive,” Dyke said. “They want well-rounded people.”
He was also invited to attend the U.S. Naval Academy’s Summer Seminar program for a week in Annapolis, Md. last summer.
“I went there to experience what a military academy is like and also for evaluation,” said Dyke, who has a 3.95 GPA and scored 1720 in his SAT.
He’s earned Eagle Scout for the Boy Scouts of America and was involved in cross country in both his junior and senior years.
Dyke, who is in the East Union High student body leadership class as the Community Service Commissioner, is currently in his second year in track and field.
In addition, he’s captain of both his cross country and track teams.
Dyke played on the Lancers golf team as a sophomore, the East Union Advanced Band for the past three years, and two years on JROTC for 2 years.
He’s been awarded multiple physical fitness awards.
Dyke is scheduled to report to the U.S. Air Force Academy on June 25 for five weeks of basic cadet training before the start of the academic semester.
