East Union Cemetery to get its own name plaque

East Union will no longer be known as the cemetery with no name come this Memorial Day.

Manteca Historical Society and Museum board members voted to purchase a plaque for the historic cemetery, and dedication ceremonies will be held immediately following Memorial Day services there at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 25.

While the old memorial arch has a name, it says, “Union Cemetery” and many people, particularly those coming from out-of-town, find it difficult to locate East Union Cemetery, its board president Bill Good said.

A large rock has been donated by Eden Garden and Landscaping at Lathrop and Simpson Stoneworks will be doing the engraving.

Other improvements have been taking place at the cemetery and the public is invited to attend the dedication and tour the oldest incorporated cemetery in San Joaquin County, Good added.
