Janet Dyk is looking forward to another Ag Venture.
The Manteca resident and event coordinator will be spearheading “Select San Joaquin Ag Venture 2010” Wednesday beginning 9 a.m. at the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds, 1658 S. Airport Way.
This installment will be made up of about 4,000 third-grade students from Stockton and Lincoln school districts. According to Dyk, they’ll experience everything from sheep shearing to goat milking to presentations on production and processing.
“This event promises to provide an exciting environment as children explore the journey from the farm to the fridge,” she said.
Dyk received kudos from Marcy Hachman at the previous Ag Venture.
The representative of the UC Davis cooperative extension deemed the one held back in November at the Manteca Unified school farm a “huge success.”
She’s the representative of the UC Davis cooperative extension.
Hachman praised the clear weather, the enthusiasm shared by local youngsters, and the hard work and dedication of 450 volunteers. Couple that with the Manteca AgVenture being held on an actual working farm.
“Select San Joaquin” is a partnership of San Joaquin County, SJ Farm Bureau, Rancho San Miguel, Food 4 Less and local schools.
The primary goals include educating county residents to the variety, quality, availability and health benefits of locally-grown produce; increasing the economic opportunities of agriculture in SJ County; educating and encouraging area youngsters on the health and taste appeal of locally-grown produce.
Since its inception five years ago, “Select San Joaquin” has introduced the ag world to thousands of third-grade students from throughout the county.
