East Union High art students recently took part in the Vans Custom Culture Contest.

In the nationwide group project, they designed canvas shoes, going with a template and then applying acrylic paints, pens, and even charcoal, according to Jeff Moring, who teaches the Intro to Art and Advanced Art classes at the school.

The local team fell shy of advancing in the contest, but the custom-designed Vans grabbed plenty of attention at last Tuesday’s East Union High Art Show.

“This was our first year of doing the Vans shoes contest,” Moring said. “The students enjoyed this project.”

The Vans and other pieces – included were sketches, paintings, ceramics, and sculptures – were on display in the library.

Kyle Harman, for example, sketched the Joker character made famous by the late Heath Ledger.

“I’m also a fan of the Dark Knight (Batman) movie,” said the senior in Moring’s Intro to Art class.

Harman is a first-time art student. “Before this, I never took an art class,” he noted.

But the visual arts were only part of the art show. The performing arts were held in the theater while the Jazz ensemble, choir and band performed various musical numbers in the band roomMoring and ceramic teacher Kim Ray said that the top visual art pieces will be entered in Tuesday’s district art show at the Manteca Unified administration building, 2271 W. Louise Ave., from 4 to 7 p.m.

Those pieces and others from throughout the district will be up for sale. Refreshments will also be served.
