The Manteca Educators Association will play host to a forum Wednesday, Sept. 8, featuring candidates for the school board.

The public is invited to attend the 5 p.m. event in the East Union High cafeteria.

Manuel Medeiros, Nancy Teicheira and Evelyn Moore are the Manteca Unified incumbents seeking re-election.

They’ll be challenged for their seats in November.

A long-time board member, Medeiros will go up against Joey Ermitanio for his Area 2 post consisting of north Manteca, Lathrop and French Camp.

Ermitanio is listed as a school district treasurer, according to the San Joaquin County Registrar of Voters office in Stockton.

Trustee Teicheira will again take on agricultural professional William Van Ryn, who sought the post four years ago, in Area 4, made up of the region south of the Highway 120 bypass.

Trustee Moore along with Don Scholl and Chuck Carpenter are vying for the two Area 5 seats.

Incumbent Vern Gebhardt created an opening by opting not to run after serving just one term.  He was elected nearly four years ago following his retirement from the district, where he served as teacher, coach and athletic director.

Scholl, meanwhile, is employed as a public works superintendent while Carpenter has the title of agribusiness broker.

As for the forum, the audience will be encouraged to provide questions to the candidates, said MEA President Ken Johnson on Wednesday.

“We will also interview the candidates to see if we endorse anyone,” he added.
