Art students in the Manteca Unified School District are invited to take part in a competition that could earn them some cool cash plus an opportunity to launch their artistic careers.

The Manteca Garden Club is looking for an original art work that will be used to help promote its 2015 garden tour set for May 9. As part of that search, the club is inviting art students in the district to submit original entries for judging.

Registration deadline for participating artists is Saturday, Nov. 15.

Art students will have until February 2015 to work on their submissions. Entries must be delivered to the garden club in the McFall Room at the Manteca Public Library between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 16, 2015.

Judging will be held Tuesday, Feb. 17, by a panel made up of garden club and Manteca Art Guild members.

The winner will be announced on Feb. 20.

Here are the contest rules:

• All participating artists must be a Manteca Unified art student.

• Only one entry per artists will be accepted, and the art work must be “no older than 2013.”

• All entries must be two-dimensional paintings and drawings including oil, acrylic, pastels, ink, and graphite. No photographic or digital art entries will be accepted.

• Entries must be no larger than 16x20 – either framed or unframed.

The winning art work will be donated to the garden club to be offered as the Grand Door Prize for the garden tour. Additionally, it will be displayed on the tour posters, on social media, and at the last garden featured in the tour.

The winning artist will receive a cash prize of $100.

All proceeds from the garden tour go back to the community in the form of beautification projects such as park tree planting during Arbor Day, plus scholarships of $1,000 each awarded to three Manteca Unified high school graduates.

Last year, the art competition was opened to members of the Manteca Artist Guild. The winner was guild member Jean Ramey who entered a watercolor garden scene.
