Howard Holtsman of Manteca has received the Association of California School Administrators Robert E. Kelly Retired Volunteer of the Year award.
Holtsman retired in 2011 as the Lindbergh Adult School principal for the Manteca Unified School District after more than 40 years as an educator. His accomplishments while working are notable but what garnered him the honor was how he has continued to be an active volunteer to improve the lives of students in the San Joaquin County area after his retirement.
He is currently serving as an ACSA retirement committee representative and on the organization’s legislative policy committee. Over the years he has served on the Manteca Boys & Girls Club board, as a volunteer for the Modesto Graffiti Parade as well as the Ride for Moms, ambassador for the Manteca Chamber of Commerce, commissioner for the Manteca Visitors and Convention Bureau, as a Manteca Noon Rotary member including a stint as president, and on the South County Crime Stoppers including a serving as secretary and president.

VanGroningen presents Dordt art project exhibit
Dordt College student Kathryn Van Groningen of Ripon presented a senior art exhibit with senior Cait Vaags of British Columbia on Saturday
“I see art as an avenue that enables a person to express his or her creative ability by crafting something. Art comes in many mediums not exclusive to paint, pencil, pen, print, photography, or three-dimensional creations,” said Van Groningen. “Art is designed by using a combination of one’s imagination, inspiration from one’s surroundings, an emotion needing expression, or a need to communicate an idea.”
Van Groningen is majoring in art with an emphasis in fine arts studio at the Sioux Center, Iowa, campus.

Manzanares graduating from Central Oklahoma
Manteca resident Samantha M. Manzanares will graduate from the University of Central Oklahoma with a Master of Business Administration degree in Business Administration along with approximately 2,183 spring and summer 2014 graduates from throughout the country and world during Central’s Commencement Ceremonies May 9-10.
The campus is located just north of Oklahoma City in Edmond, Okla.

Maderos makes Dean’s List at Azusa Pacific
Manteca resident and Azusa Pacific University student Ashley Maderos made the academic Deans’ List at APU. Maderos is honored for a fall semester 2013 academic standing of a 3.5 or better grade-point average. Maderos is joined by 1,774 other students receiving the same honor.
Azusa Pacific University is an evangelical Christian university committed to God First and excellence in higher education.

MHS students earn essay recognition
Manteca High students Kylie Cunningham and Stephanie Salemi received Semi-Finalist and Honorable Mention certificates, respectfully, in the annual Stossel Essay Contest.
There were 6,767 essays were submitted from around the country, and 125 were selected as prize winners.
This year’s topic was about whether it should be the government’s job to try to keep people healthy by restricting their food choices. The students in English teacher Tim Jensen’s class viewed a TV special prior to writing the essay.
