As part of Operation Military Support, Lathrop High School’s Ross Downum, who is involved in the Junior Reserve Officers Training Corp., had an opportunity to accompany three World War II Veterans to McClellan Air Force Base to the Freedom Flight Air Show.

The local JROTC program drew the attention of Operation Military Support based on its outstanding performance at various functions throughout the year. This included the presentation at an Operation Military Support fundraiser coupled with the recent performance at the Lathrop Veterans Memorial during the Memorial Day ceremony.

Cadet Sgt. Ross Downum had the honor of assisting and escorting Oscar Kenyon, Richard Butler and William Burton, all from Calaveras County, to their flight on a World War II bomber B-17 and an awards ceremony for a total of 10 WWII Veterans last Saturday.

Jim Waldon of Placerville made possible Operation Military Support. He paid for the flights of all ten men in honor of their military service.
