LATHROP — Lathrop Elementary participated in the International Walk to School Day last week Friday, Oct. 2.
Lathrop Elementary was one of an estimated 5,000 schools from all 50 states who will have, or are planning on, participating this month with walkers from another 40 countries around the world.
Lathrop’s Walk to School event was in partnership with Manteca Unified Nutrition Services to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasizing the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, health, nutrition, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment and building connections between families, schools and the broader community.
Along with the school’s administration, the Lathrop-Manteca Fire Department was there to hand out stickers and welcome students and families to the school site during the planned event. Nutrition Services sponsored a breakfast that served over 700 students and guests at no cost.
In conjunction, Lathrop’s Student Leadership promoted Hat’s on Day as one of their services back to the community. Students wore hats Friday and gave up coins or cash to give to the Children with Cancer Foundation.
As a school site, Lathrop brought in $525.10 for the one day collection.
The students were proud to give back to the community especially knowing that it could help out other children their age and was started by students just like them. Hats on Day was founded in 1995 by four sixth-graders in St. Louis, Missouri. They began the fundraiser when their friend and classmate Kevin Beffa who was diagnosed with cancer.
