A two-week recycling contest earned Lincoln School students $375.

The City of Manteca’s recycling division worked in conjunction with the school staff. Students were instructed to bring in plastic bottles and aluminum cans for the two weeks.

The contest was between primary grades (kindergarten through third grade) and intermediate grades (fourth through eighth grade).

The city  took the cans and bottles to the recycling center on Moffat Boulevard and met Tony Barros the head custodian from the school there..

The majority of what was collected were in plastic bottles - 3,191 and 2,522 aluminum cans.

They received a check for $375.

“Now imagine this,” noted Rexie LeStrange, Manteca’s recycling coordinator, “if the school — or any school -for that matter, collected cans and bottles for the entire school year. (That would be) $375 for two weeks times (approximately) 36 weeks in a school year divided by two, because this is for two weeks, that could be a potential revenue of $6,750. Wow, just from recycling bottles and cans!  What a deal.”

Here’s the breakdown of the contest:

• Primary grades brought in:  1,982 plastic bottles and 1,492 aluminum cans.

 • Secondary grades brought in:  1,209 plastic bottles and 1,030 aluminum cans.

The primary grades will get pizza for being the winners.

The school will get two benches made from recycled plastic lumber with “Lincoln Raiders”  inscribed on the top board and the number of cans/bottles they recycled on the second board. The school also gets the $375.
