The end of the summer break is near for Manteca Unified students with classes set to resume on Thursday, Aug. 9.

For freshmen, that first day of school can be a big change amid their new surroundings.

Enter Link Crew, where upperclassmen are extensively trained to ease the transition for those newcomers.

A few days prior to that first day, ninth-grade students will get their chance to become familiar with their new school during freshmen orientation.

It’s there that Link Crew leaders get these newcomers involved with a series of ice-breaking activities. They’ll meet together as a whole early on before breaking up into smaller groups. Freshmen, during that, will also get the grand tour of the campus.

At Manteca High, freshmen orientation is scheduled for Winter Gymnasium on Monday, Aug. 6, from 8 a.m. to noon. Registration, for juniors (8 to 9:30 a.m.) and seniors (10 to 11:30), will be held on Thursday, Aug. 2, and Friday, Aug. 3, for freshmen (8 to 10 a.m.) and sophomores (8 to 9:30).

On Monday, Aug. 6, orientation for freshmen and newcomers will be held at East Union High coupled with “Round Up” for freshmen (12:30 to 2 p.m.) and juniors (2 to 3:30 p.m.). Sophomores (12:30 to 2 p.m.) and seniors (2 to 3 p.m.) will have their “Round Up” on Tuesday, Aug. 7.

Lathrop High will have Spartans Unite sessions. On Monday, Aug. 6, seniors can register for the new school year beginning at 7:30 a.m., with juniors following at 10 o’clock. On Tuesday, Aug. 7, sophomores will meet at 7:30 a.m. and freshmen doing likewise at 10.

In addition, Sierra High has set aside Aug. 6-7 for orientation. The freshmen event at Weston Ranch will be held on Aug. 6.

More information can be obtained by calling the school site offices on Monday or the MUSD at 209-858-3200.

Ripon Unified

The first Pow Wow for Ripon High students is today from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., inside the Multi-Use Room. During that time, seniors and juniors will have a chance to register for the 2012-13 school year. Parents are not required to attend but must have all necessary forms signed.

Ditto that for freshmen and sophomores, who will meet Tuesday for their Pow Wow or registration session, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Students return to the classrooms on Tuesday, Aug. 7, with freshmen orientation planned beforehand.
