Trustees of the Manteca Unified School District will meet Tuesday to discuss items affecting next year’s budget.
Take busing for special needs students. For years, the district has contracted with an outside agency for this service.
The board, in an effort to trim about $23 million for part of this year along with 2009-10, will look to authorize staff to purchase school buses specifically for the special education transportation program at the 7 p.m. open session.
On the table is an additional 3 percent cuts in salary to all employees in the district on top of the 5 percent in deduction from the 10 days off coming from the state level. Both sides – included are Manteca Educators Association, California School Employees Association, and other unrepresented groups – are currently in negotiations.
Trustees Vern Gebhardt and Wendy King believe this course of action could save both jobs and programs such as class size reduction in the kindergarten-through- third-grade classes and for freshmen while keeping Lathrop High in operation.
Those involved in Acting Superintendent Jason Messer’s budget reduction committee believe otherwise, instead, entrusting that the school board would follow the recommendation to look at both mid-year and Level III cuts on a per line basis or each item separately.
Other agenda items include:
• The board will receive an update on state and federal budget issues.
• Trustees will discuss possible dates for dedication ceremonies for the joint-use facilities at both Neil Hafley and Shasta schools.
• The board will look to approve French Camp School’s joint-use agreement with the Boys and Girls Clubs.
• Trustees could discuss and vote for the 2009 California School Board Association election candidate.
