Weston Ranch High School likes suspense. While the other comprehensive high schools in the Manteca Unified School District have announced the names of their graduating class valedictorians and salutatorians, Weston Ranch wants to continue its tradition of maintaining the suspense by not revealing at this point the names of its top graduates.

“We don’t release them until awards night. It’s just a tradition we have here,” explained Principal Jose Fregoso.

It was a tradition in place when he came on board as principal five years ago and they are keeping it that way, he said.

The suspense will end on Tuesday, May 20, when the awards night will be held starting at 6 the school cafeteria. The announcement of the Class of 2014 valedictorian and salutatorian will not be the only highlights that evening. Scholarships will be awarded and honor cords will be distributed at that time.

One piece of information that Fregoso allowed to be announced at this point is the number of seniors graduating this year. There are 254 students receiving their diplomas.

Below are the top graduates at the other high schools in Manteca Unified:

• Manteca High – Valedictorian, Poonam Kaur Dehal; salutarian is Anna Kepa. Dehal is attending the University of California, Davis this fall; Kepa will attend UC Berkeley.

• East Union High – Valedictorian, Will Davis; salutatorian, Brooke Neindorf.

• Sierra High – Valedictorian, Leonor Borges; salutatorian, Anna Cardenas.

• Lathrop High – Spartans’ top students are co-valedictorians Kultarr Ram and Gurpreet Atwal. There is no salutatorian. According to school officials, the two male graduates are not just sharing the top honors at their graduation; they are also “really good friends.”

Calla High School’s graduation speaker will be Bryan Carmona. He came to Calla through East Union High School.
