Manteca High English teacher Dawn Coyan knows that there isn’t any way that she can meet the parents of each of her students during the school’s annual Back to School night.
There are far too many parents and only one of her.
But given the way that the program, which was held Wednesday, is structured, it does provide something equally important for the parents of Manteca High students, Coyan says – the chance to see what they are going to be doing in the classroom when they’re away from home.
“It’s great to be able to show parents where it is that they’re going, what it looks like, and what they’re going to be doing over the course of the year,” she said. “It would be really hard for me to meet the parents of every single student I have in one night, but this allows the parents to come in and see what their kids get to see on a daily basis.
“And it shows us as teachers that we’re not alone and that there is another part of this team which there are parents that are concerned about the education their children are receiving. I think that’s good.”
Getting that perspective and seeing what it is that their son does when he leaves the house every morning was a benefit that Joey and Ryan Valaer enjoyed about the event. The couple got the chance to see their son Jake’s locker and the inside of his classrooms.
“It’s a good chance to see where he spends his days,” said father Ryan Valaer. “It’s beneficial to us to get the chance to talk to his teachers and see the atmosphere that he works in. We like it.”
