Park View wins first SJC math Olympiad

RIPON — Ripon’s Park View Elementary has just won a place in local history.

The school’s math team emerged as the winner in the First Annual San Joaquin Math Olympiad.

The competition was hosted by the San Joaquin County Board of Education. The event was made up of 175 fifth and sixth graders who comprised 25 different teams.

Park View Elementary’s winning team was comprised of students Hope Fardanesh, Joseph Johnson, Vivian Kellner, Jasmine Parra, and Emily Reynoso who were thrilled to win the event.

Kellner also received a ribbon for being the highest scorer on her team.

The contest was extremely close. It took four tie-breaker questions at the end of the day to determine a winner.

Kellner said they were “very excited to win, but we are just happy to be involved in such an exciting event.”

The highest overall scores of the day came from Rio Calaveras Elementary Gold’s Carmen Huang and Vinewood Elementary White’s Eduardo Lima.

The top five overall scoring schools were awarded medals and a plaque.

The top five scoring teams were as follows: 1) Park View Elementary (Purple), Ripon Unified School District, 2) Vinewood Elementary (Red), Lodi Unified School District

Rio Calaveras Elementary (Green), Stockton Unified School District, 3) Rio Calaveras Elementary (Gold), Stockton Unified School District, 4) Monte Vista Middle School (Teal), and 5)  Tracy Unified School District.
