RIPON — A Ripon High School Sports Hall of Fame is on the horizon to mark the school’s upcoming 100th anniversary in public education.

RHS Principal Lance Morrow presented an outline of the proposed recognition of former alumni to school district trustees recently – to honor many of whom have long since graduated.  Ripon High School teacher and coach Rod Wright is serving as the chairman for the program.

The purpose of the project is to recognize, preserve and promote the heritage of the Indian sports program at Ripon High School.  It was noted that many individuals have made extraordinary contributions and have had superb accomplishments in high school sports.

The sports hall of fame is designed to honor the accomplishments of former students whose merits will serve as role models for present-day athletes to emulate.

A total of 25 former Ripon students will be accepted into nomination during the current year with five to be tapped for recognition in each succeeding year, Morrow explained.

All candidates must be at least 25 prior to August 1, of any given year of their nomination.

Three categories are open for selection including coaches, athletes and others with outstanding achievements during their years at Ripon High School.

Coaches would be considered on the merits of their high school coaching achievements only.

The areas of sports medicine and sports media will also be considered in the nominations.  The screening committee is to be made up of a chairman, three Ripon High coaches, one member who will represent the RHS athletic director and five community members who are alumni of Ripon High.

All applications for recognition in the Hall of Fame must be received by May 10 with notification of selections to be made by the end of May.  The Hall of Fame induction ceremonies are expected to take place in August or September at Ripon High School.

Nomination papers are available at Ripon High School.
