Shasta School brings back career day event

It’s been years since Shasta School held a Career Day.

But after a nine-year absence, the event for seventh- and eighth- grade students will make its return on Friday, Jan. 22.

Jackie Kron, the special day school junior high teacher, is thrilled to be part of the latest edition. She’s been at Shasta since 1998.

“I think it’s great that we’re bringing Career Day back,” Kron said on Wednesday.

Plans call for students to engage in mock interviews while taking notes on the various job presenters and, according to Kron, “dressing for success.”

The notes are necessary for the Passport to College program and the research project for the writing proficiency. The latter also fulfills the Language Arts curriculum required for junior high youngsters.

Judy Casetta and her staff at the San Joaquin County Office of Education will serve as job development coaches, with students needing to dress up in the appropriate business attire in order to receive credit.

“We’re also hoping to bring career awareness (to students),” Kron said.

Career Day kicks off at 9:30 a.m. in the multi-purpose facility better known as the Hornets Nest. From there, the guest speakers are scheduled to talk 30 minutes to students, rotating to the various classrooms.

Included are East Union High product and Oakland Athletic pitching prospect Justin Friend, who played last season with the Class-A Stockton Ports; Sheriff Deputy David Green; NASA scientist and engineer Gary French; and computer programmer Glenn Kuhn.

Representatives from U.S. Armed Forces and Supercuts will also be on hand.

“Our students will have a wide variety of information,” said Kron. “It should spark ideas for their writing.”

She and the junior high staff at Shasta spent the past five weeks including the holidays in organizing this comeback event.
