LATHROP - Parents of Joseph Widmer, Jr. School students won’t have to worry about hurrying to make dinner for the family before heading out to the annual Back to School event on Thursday, Aug. 30.

They are all invited to the school cafeteria and enjoy a nacho dinner sponsored by the Parent-Teacher Club. Food. Drinks will also be available from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Widmer School program coordinator Lisa Schnaidt the dinner offering is nachos with different toppings on it such as cheese.

“We usually do dinner with Back-to-School Night. Because of the time frame, it is basically from 6 to 8 p.m., which is normally dinner time for families,” Schnaidt said.

“We’ve done different things” through the years, she added. “We’ve done barbecue; this year, they wanted to do nachos.”

The dinner serves as a fund-raiser for the Parent-Teacher Club, with all proceeds going back to the school.

“Our PTC is wonderful. They fund all of our reading programs. Anything that the teachers need, PTC funds it,” Schnaidt said.

Which is good news to the teachers who “have been hit hart, too, just like our school budgets; everyone is feeling the pinch,” she said.

To maximize their fund-raising efforts that evening, the PTC members also will be selling T-shirts.

Currently serving as president of PTC is Nicole Williams who also happens to be “one of our teachers,” Schnaidt said.

And, as it happens, “she has numerous children here (at Widmer School) as well,” Schnaidt noted. One graduated last year, but three of Williams’ children still attend Widmer.

The Back-to-School dinner is just one of several fund-raisers conducted by the PTC during the school year. They also hold an open house late in spring.

The remainder of Back to School next week will consist of classroom presentations and visits with teachers from 7 to 8 p.m. This is the time when teachers usually go over things with parents such as what to expect during the school year, day-to-day schedules, homework requirements, plus a review of all kinds of district assessments.

The evening will begin at 5:30 with junior high teachers meeting with the students’ parents. Topics will include promotion requirements and other pertinent information for the students and their families. Included will be the regular classroom visitations as well.
